Hello! I'm excited you're here! My name is Noël Jones, and I created EYE TO EYE to get people talking to each other about things most of us weren't taught in school. Some amazing concepts and episodes of history have been sealed away from the public, like mosquitos trapped in amber, behind a barrier of academic lingo. I felt compelled to break them out, break them down, and share them!

Speaking of "sealed away," do you think our social media habits might be changing how we interact with each other in person?

We're forever presenting ourselves in new profiles and posting about what we think we know on line, instead of asking others to share their thoughts with us, and listening to each other. Sometimes when I'm walking around in public, picking up snippets of conversations, it sounds like everyone's just reciting information back and forth that they've read or heard in the news somewhere else.

Are we forgetting how to converse? Are we verbally posting to each other in person now?

I like to get conversations going by asking a question, or sharing information that isn't discussed much in the news or on social media. And why isn't it discussed? Because it was written in academic jargon that the 87% of Americans who don't have advanced degrees can't understand. It wasn't meant for most of us to know.

During my research in grad school, I discovered some mind-blowing concepts and amazing secrets about our history that are still hidden from most of us by that barrier of lingo. So, I slogged through as much as I could find related to queer and feminist theory, and translated it into words that most English-speakers can understand. The quotes I chose to translate either captured certain concepts I'd never encountered before, or described episodes of history I'd never learned about in school, or ever heard anyone talk about.

So, I hope you enjoy these flashcards as much as I enjoyed making them. If you do, please tell your friends! You can follow us via Facebook and Instagram and/or this blog. I look forward to your thoughts and questions, and to seeing some good conversations happen! And remember, it's OK to disagree with people, but be kind or be blocked--insults aren't conversations. Neither is spamming or trolling.

I'll be posting a flashcard now and then, when the mood strikes, or an occasional article that relates to the spirit of this project somehow, so stay tuned.

Is there a topic related to gender, feminism or queer theory that you'd like to see a flashcard about?

Lmk!

Noël

[Psst! Attention students: This deck comes with a bibliography of full citations. So, if you're taking gender studies, feminist theory, queer theory or women's history, you'll find a lot in here you can use. Also, this deck is intersectional and features quotes from academic scholars who are women, queer, trans, black, indigenous and/or other people of color.]
